Dental Carries and Photoshop

February 5, 2010 Family

I photoshop my daughter’s smile almost every time. I am ashamed to admit it, but I am embarrassed by her teeth.  Not because of Lizzie, but because I feel like those huge black spots on her pretty baby teeth are shouting, “look! this mama didn’t properly care for her daughter’s teeth! See the failure?”

I know I am overdramatic, but you have to admit that seeing decay on the front teeth of your princess brings with it a small amount of mommy guilt.

To make matters worse, her wonderful pediatric dentist told me when first saw the carries that it was her nursing at night that made them worse (and he almost insinuated that it caused them).  Nighttime nursing and dental carries is a highly debated topic.  You will have dentists supporting either side – believe me, I have researched and researched it!

Some people say that breastmilk is actually good for the teeth, having germ fighting properties, others will point out how high in sugars breastmilk can be.  Some say that nursing causes the milk to go down the throat so the front teeth shouldn’t be the ones decaying from it, others will point out how a dripping nipple will rest in a toddler’s mouth.

Sheesh. Can we just come to a consensus?

All I know is that Lizzie needs dental work and I feel so badly that all her beautiful baby pictures have these black spots on them. Hooray for photoshop, eh?

this is better than ear infections. bottles can cause ear infections. and then they have bad ears the rest of their lives. and you don’t think i feel guilty about that?

my friend robyn nursed her daughter for 14 months and then when she was like 2 had to have her front teeth pulled out because of decay. so she won’t have front teeth until she’s 5 or 6 when her adult teeth come in. I’m bad about brushing B’s teeth because he fights it so much, but i fight back lol

So who thinks dental insurance is just as important as health insurance reform? I think they should be combined, what are you thoughts?
