Emotions were high around Manhattan, KS today. Restaurants and bars hosted Pinstripe bowl viewing parties and almost every television was tuned in. It was a very close game as Kansas State University and Syracuse were equally matched and bashed it out in New York City in Yankee Stadium. Ultimately, one small salute from Adrian Hilburn after he made a touchdown that made a (now hated) ref throw down a penalty for excessive celebration. They were given a 2 yard penalty and lost to Syracuse 36-34.
Twitter and Facebook erupted with seething comments. Groans and yells could be heard around town. I pity the poor people that TIVO’d the game and don’t know about this yet.
I live close to K-State and have been a fan my entire life, even before Coach Bill Snyder turned this losing team into a bowl-winning one. I bleed purple and am just as devastated as everyone around. For those of you curious about what the salute looked like, here is a video of the “excessive celebration” I found on youtube. Personally, I (as well as everyone around here) think college players should have just as much freedom to rejoice in their huge plays as NFL players. I just don’t get the logic of forcing players to celebrate off the field only. I can only imagine the soaring adrenaline rush a player must experience when they outrun a challenging defense and score a touch down, and they want to enforce no celebration? Boo!
