Who is this organized, and what is your secret?!? My kitchen cabinet tour!

FacebookTwitterPinterestGoogle+StumbleUponReddit

I am always in search of inspiration to become more organized in my home. I came across this amazing blog called “IHeart Organizing!” I fell in love. Then I felt like crap about myself. Her inspiration is more dreamlike than attainable to me. I will continue to visit her blog when I need an idea or when I get the itch to organize something. But can I actually live like her? I don’t think I can!

Check out her Kitchen Cabinets tour.  She even took photos inside her fridge and freezer that are impeccably organized.  Now tell me – are you this organized? Maybe I am too busy, maybe I don’t have enough left brain-ness…but I am just not wired that way. I have no clue why – I can organize it all and work so hard to maintain it, but a month later it is all back to what it was before.

If you are like me and not able to stay organized, I am here to make you feel better. Here is my kitchen tour!

First, the shot of my kitchen! If you continue to turn right when you face the stove, you will face the sink.  To the right of the sink is my dishwasher and an upper cabinet. Next to that is my refrigerator. It is a lovely little kitchen and Josh designed and built the cabinets completely by himself.

This is the cabinet above my breakfast bar.  It is where I keep the foods for Lizzie’s school lunches.  I wonder how many people will judge me for the crap I give her to eat? Yes, I need to work on feeding her fresher foods and not processed junk. I’m working on it.

This is the cabinet to the left of the stove.  By the way – Josh bought cereal without me at the store. I hate Cocoa Crispies about as much as Lucky Charms.  Anyways, This is a huge upper cabinet and I bet organizers would have a field day making this so organized. I welcome them to come and help me do it. I’d love to see this in less disarray.

This is the most organized cabinet in my kitchen! The plates could be sorted by size, but when I am putting away dishes faster than the roadrunner escapes the coyote, I don’t take the extra 5 seconds that would require.  But it is low enough my kids can put dishes away too! (another reason they are disorganized. But at least they are helping!)

I have tried to organize this drawer. It never stays. So I gave up.  That rubbermaid container has all my teas in it. There are also a few paper plates in there somewhere as well as packages of napkins.

I thought having a drawer instead of just a shelf would help my pots and pans easier to keep in their places. Nope! Just easier to get to in the big mess.

Oh look! I have two drawers of messy pots and pans! And I think those are random plastic place mats. And a mixing bowl. No idea…

Awww, my plastic containers have the same problem the pots and pans do! Big drawer, no idea what is what. I have honestly gone through and matched lids with bowls, stacked and organized this thing countless times.

This is my baking drawer. There are cutting boards, strainers (why do I need more than 2? I never cook that many noodles at once) and random mixers I do not use anymore but won’t throw out because I swear I will use them again. After typing this out, I am just itching to donate half of the items in this drawer.

At the time of these photos, most of my sippy cups were in the dishwasher. But this is the easiest drawer for my kids to reach, so it is where I keep the rags and kids’ cups.  The two items they use the most. Normally, I will put the cups in the drawer with their lids attached. This saves me time having to find the lids in the pile.

This drawer drives my husband batty. But that cracks me up because he is even less organized than I am! So the fact that a messy drawer irritates him actually makes me laugh. We have like 4 sets of measuring cups and spoons on there. And lots of random potholders. If you are trying to bake something, get your measuring cups out before you start baking. It will save you time.

Josh cleaned this drawer out while I was away at a blog conference! I asked him to clean the kitchen before I came back, and he cleaned out one drawer.  He has this funny combo of OCD + ADD where he cleans something but then gets fixated on one thing and can’t finish what he started doing.  So hey! This is organized!

To the left and right of my stove are these little inserts.  I keep my spices in one and my cans in the other.

I thought they were this awesome idea, and I still really like the spices one.  But the canned goods one isn’t my favorite anymore.  First, I can’t keep very many cans in it. Next, the cans are difficult to get in and out of the rack since it is so close to my other cabinets.

But it sure looks good, doesn’t it?

Above my stove are all the cookbooks I use! And yes, I do use them! Maybe not all of them, but when I need a new idea, I grab them.  And waaaayyyyy up there is my George Foreman grill. I need to stand on a chair to reach it. I hate being short.

I love my lazy Susans!  This is the upper. It holds so much random stuff – salt/pepper, sugars, nuts, oils, coffees…

And this is the lower. It is where I keep my Pyrex dishes, mixing bowls and my crockpot and waffle iron. Oh and organized? They are all in one place, right? yup! Good enough for me :)

Above the dishwasher I keep my cups and mugs! This is pretty organized.  And empty, considering I was running the dishwasher at the time.

The last one is the one I do not use at all!  It is where I keep my paper towels and anything else I don’t really use, ever.  You see, this is above my refrigerator. That means, I cannot reach this without a chair or ladder. It is really really deep, so it can hold a lot of stuff! And since it is so deep (and I am so short) Josh made it with a pull out drawer. But I need that ladder first.

That is it!!

So, you tell me – how organized is your kitchen? Are you as meticulous as IHeart Organizing or are you kinda/sorta like me? Share share share! I gotta know that I’m not some sort of crazy messy awful mommy-ness!

So glad I am not the only one! LOL!! I really do try to organize it, but I need time. And free rubbermaid containers.

your counters are so clean! mine are a continual mess. my only real suggestion is for your silverware drawer that seems to have so many extra ‘big utensils’ in it. I would suggest a crock jar or something similar for your counter top near your stove for your turners, spatulas, anything that’s not used strictly for eating. Go ahead and sort out what you do not use and put them in another room for a while. if you have to go back for something, then keep it, if not, then after a few weeks, donate it. I tend to stack my stuff by size. I do have 2 ‘junk’ drawers, okay close to 3. a big part is just not getting stuff back where it belongs. typically I have stuff that belongs in A spot. If it doesn’t go back to that spot, we end up with a mess.

Thanks for the idea Jill. I used to keep stuff in a container on my counter like you said, but then I didn’t like that my drawer – that is out of site – is almost empty and my counter had stuff on top. I prefer to keep my counters nearly empty so I have more room to work with. My kitchen is kinda small so every little bit of space is important.

I dont know about drawers, but shelves you can get ‘undershelf’ baskets (I can send you a link) that allows you to make a ‘bonus’ shelf under your middle/upper shelf. I did this in 3 of my cabinets and am very pleased with it. I have one bonus shelf for plastic glasses, one for plastic plates, and one that I put my platter and other misc small stuff on. It’s a nice division, and I’m not continually moving big/small items because they are secured up and out of the way.

Ever since my daughter started helping out in the kitchen, it is so unorganized. I am so pleased that she is helping out, willingly. I fight my ocd daily not to go and re-do everything because I don’t want to discourage her. I think this weekend I’m overdue for an organize/donate session though!

Isn’t that the best trade off? My daughter Lucy loves to help put dishes away too. And yes, she just throws things in there. I try to go behind her and fix it, but I end up using that time to get more done somewhere else LOL

Thanks :) He owns a cabinet shop here…..so I know a good place to go if you are ever in the mood to fix your kitchen up LOL ;)

LOL First of all, you are so brave to show us inside your cupboards, its nice to know I’m not alone! I love how you store your pots and pans and tupperware just plain sucks (but I can’t imagine life without it!) One tip I can give you is buy a cheap wire shelves that you can put inside your cupbards to double your space….it helped me with my ‘dishes’ cupboard and my ‘food’ cupboard. The rest of my drawers kinda look like yours but if you can make more room in some cupboards, it really does help! :)

Thank you Carrie! I really was nervous about showing everyone how unorganized I really am. It sure looks amazing from the outside :)

I love the wire shelves idea. I bet that would help with the cabinet that has the snacks in it.

My dream kitchen is organize. My real life kitchen not so much. We remodeled recently and I still haven’t figured out where to put anything that really makes sense. Your cabinets and drawers look mine. I do love lazy suzannes too! I don’t have any but my mom does and they are so great!

    • Annie @ Mama Dweeb says

I dream of being organized too! For now, I am just happy to have clean floors and counters. What goes on behind the cabinet doors will just have to wait until my kids are out of the house. Or I have a bit more time to focus on them. I think once a quarter they will be amazing LOL :)

I’m not nearly as organized, my kitchen was in complete disarray before checking out that site last week. Then I got a bee in my bonnet to get it organized. I have a post going up on Tuesday. I’m hoping I can keep it looking pretty though, and not in as much chaos as it was before.

I will be stopping by your blog on Tuesday to read! Maybe….just maybe, I will get that bee to fly in MY bonnet….we will see

I think I am in between. I am not SUPER organized, but my drawers/cabinets/pantry are not disastrous either. I love your cabinets!

I am short, too. I have a stool in the pantry, and when I need something I get it out.
