Screen shot 2013-01-04 at 2.17.56 PMThe Verizon Navigator app for smartphones is a premium GPS mapping service that goes beyond mere turn-by-turn directions. You can find local events, compare gas prices, and so much more. There are so many features and the app is so easy to navigate that it earns my choice for best GPS app!
(Even more reason to go with Verizon for your cell phone service! I have been a happy customer for over 10 years)

While I do wish this app was free – I am happy with the $2/month subscription fee. The roadside assistance feature, and traffic updates, make this fee worth every dime. It has a 30-day free trial, I say you should try it out and see what you think!

When you first log into the app, you see the local weather, you can search nearby (verbally, or type it in), or click “go to.”  I will be showing you the screenshots of my favorite features below. But one thing I didn’t screenshot for privacy reasons was the “search contacts” feature. This one is awesome! If you have a contact in your phone and you want to visit them, you click their name and it will bring the directions up! (Yes, you do have to have the contact saved with their full address first.) So easy!

Why I wish I had this app before, a short story:

I was running late to the airport, going from the AgChat conference in Kansas City to the Kansas City Airport to fly to Niche Mommy Conference. I thought I left in plenty of time, but I was in an unknown part of Kansas City. And there was road construction. My free app had no idea how to get around the construction. I literally drove around in circles and ended up at a railroad crossing! It was infuriating! I am paying for this app now, I never want to relive that experience ever again!

How to compare local gas prices

This is such a neat feature, and it displays on the start up screen of the app. You can instantly see the closest gas stations to you and what their prices are.  ($3.04 is a fabulous price, isn’t it?) Then, when you tap the list, it downloads a complete list of all the gas stations nearby, their prices per gallon, and you can click the individual listing and get turn-by-turn directions! I can see this being super helpful on roadtrips – never pay more than you have to for gas again!

And if you are wondering what movie to see, you can click this list.  It brings up a list of all movies within 50 mile radius.  You can click the movie you want to see and it shows a brief description, the rating, star rating, and genre.  Then tap the bright red “show times” button and it brings up all the theaters within 100 miles that are showing the movie, the showtimes, contact info for the theaters, and (of course) you can then get directions to the theater of your choice!

Note: This is a super awesome feature especially for people that live in big cities. I’m a country girl. We have one theater in my town. I have to drive an hour to get to another one.

Another thing I love about the maps and directions is you can touch each direction in the list and it reads it out loud. I hate it when I am driving in a new place, and have to drive and read the next directions so I know what to expect. Not safe. The font is large, the buttons easy to see. And I can finally focus on driving and let the app talk to me when I tell it to!

This is why I think the Verizon Navigator app is definitely worth $2 a month. It is so handy, I know it will be used all the time.

What do you think? If you are a Verizon customer, will you be trying this app out?

I left this same comment on your Facebook page, so here goes:

I have been a Verizon customer for 10+ years and will NEVER use VZ Navigator. I use Google Maps. It is FREE and comes with a variety of useful features including layers for instant traffic (very useful when I had to drive in bad weather from Oklahoma to Texas), satellite, bicycling routes, public transit lines, terrain, nearby gas stations, atms and banks, restaurants, and more. You can also search for destinations by business type or name and get instant reviews before visiting. I have never had a need to use VZ Navigator and as long as Google Maps remains free I won’t ever. In fact, the *most annoying* thing I find about VZ Navigator app is that I CANNOT DELETE the bugger from my Verizon Wireless store bought phone.

Another question I have about the VZ Navigator app…do you mean that it doesn’t do voice turn by turn navigation? You have to hit a button? Google Maps has FREE voice turn by turn navigation. If that is not included in the $2 price you are getting RIPPED OFF.

I have a Verizon Wireless Powered Smartphone and I have this app and I must say that it is way better than Google Maps or any other GPS App I’ve used!
