Tobacco products are the only ones that will harm you if you use them as intended. As a mom, it is my responsibility to protect my children and teach them how to take care of their bodies. This includes teaching them to eat healthy, stay actives, and the dangers of tobacco.
Did you know that tobacco racks up $289 billion in health care bills and economic losses each year? Every. Single. Year. And it is completely preventable.
This post is sponsored by The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. I am 100% on board with everything they are doing to protect children from the harm of tobacco products. This includes making sure our children are not marketed to in any way.
Another fact that made me sick was tobacco companies spend $8.8 billion per year, $1 million per hour on marketing. One million dollars every hour. This includes time spent figuring out where to place ads in stores and where to sell their products – like at the counter where my kids are waiting for me to pay for our groceries.
What I don’t understand is this: How come liquor is forced in its own stores but tobacco products are sold at the same counter as the candy bars?
When I was a child, my mom boycotted stores that sold pornography near the check out. She was a champion for making the world a better place for me. I am passing along that same passion. I hope that someday my children will be parents and be able to shop at major retailers without their kids having to see tobacco products or ads for tobacco products.
It can be done.
In fact, it is already under way! I am grateful to Target for creating a safe and clean place for me to shop that is tobacco-free. And if I had a CVS Pharmacy near me, I’d be shopping there since they are tobacco-free. For now, I do as much shopping as I possibly can at my Target.
Unfortunately, every single grocery store that I prefer to purchase quality meat and veggies from also sells tobacco. The only tobacco-free retailers in my area are Target and Aldi’s! Two.
This needs to change.
