Modern photographic technology is awesome – even a modern smart phone is able to take great images in most situations. But if you want to go that little bit further with your photography, sooner or later you will have to think about what a digital SLR has to offer. Now is a great time too – competition between manufacturers have resulted in not just affordable prices and great features but also an improvement in just how easy SLR cameras are to use.
Canon EOS Rebel T5
A great example of this is the Canon EOS Rebel T5 (known as the EOS 1200D in Europe). The headline specs are impressive enough – 18 megapixels, 3 fps motor drive, great ISO range from 100 to 12,800 and a massive 3 inch LCD screen for reviewing your pictures. But the numbers only tell half the story – you have to really handle the camera to appreciate the finer points.
Size & Weight
First, its size and weight. Here Canon really have got the balance right – not too small as to be finicky to operate and not too big and so bulky to prevent you from taking it for a day’s shoot. Basic operation is fast and easy too with a lot of the main functions such as exposure compensation, white balance and drive mode all having a single button for instant access. Don’t you just hate a camera that requires you to go through a seemingly endless menu just to turn off the flash? And that 3 inch LCD also works in ‘Live View’ too for fine focusing and composition, letting you zoom in on the image before you take it.
These days many photographers would expect an advanced DSLR camera to offer some form of video capability but this camera goes a stage further with full HD (at 1920 x 1080) and even a slow motion capability. Ideal to capture your daughter’s perfect ballet moves! There is of course a built-in microphone with the ability to adjust the sound level manually.
Sounds great, huh? Well arguably one of the best features isn’t even on the camera itself, as Canon bundle it with a unique app called the Canon EOS 1200D Companion. This is designed to explain the photographic process and camera operation but would also be great for those of us who have used cameras in the past since it includes a section called ‘Inspire’. This generates photo projects to challenge and extend your creativity so you’ll never be at a loss for subjects.
Canon have done a great job with this camera, and the best news is it’s fairly easy to find, you can pick it up at online retailers like Tesco for a very reasonable price. This is a great first-DSLR camera investment, it’s easy to use for first-time photographers, you can get creative with all the features, keep up with the action and the results are excellent. So if you want to get more from your photography the Canon Eos Rebel T5 may be just what you need.
