Readers, it has been far too long since I gave away any fluff.  Look at this pretty pocket diaper I got in my swag bag at BlogHer!  It is a BabyKicks Hemp pocket diaper and the snaps just pop on that white PUL!

Since this is the week of love, I thought I’d answer “why does Annie love cloth diapers?”

Because I want to make baby poop fun!

The first time I saw a Goodmama Diaper, it was love at first sight.  But I refused to buy it. Yet. I needed to convince Josh that it was ok to spend $35 on a diaper. That was going to be pooped in. So I did the math and told him we could switch to cloth to save money. I bought prefolds and covers at first. Then he couldn’t use them.  So I bought one Goodmama and he liked it!  Yes!! It fit Lizzie so well (she was a year old) and looked so beautiful on her. That was the end of that! I added cute fabric to my prefolds and bought diapers in bright covers and cheery prints.

Seriously my friends – if I am going to be changing diapers all day long, I might as well have some lovely diapers to fold and be happy as I do it. Disposables are not cute – no matter what jeans print they try to put on them. I really do love folding my cloth diapers! It is one of the few chores I look forward to doing every day.  And it is so fun to put these cute diapers on Lucy and David. Let’s face it – cute clothes are not always comfortable or practical, but cute diapers? Now there is something I can feel good about spending my money on.

No, the baby poop itself will never be fun. But putting the diapers on before the poop – that is the fun part! And Lizzie loves helping me change her diapers and fold the diapers.  I love my cloth diapers, I do!

I will be completely honest – I did not cloth diaper 100% of the time straight from the hospital. I let the nurses put sposies on Lucy at the hospital, and at night I used sposies. I blame the c-section, drugs and total lack on my part of training friends and family on how to care for the cloth diapers before Lucy was born.

But ever since Lucy came home at 3 days old I have used cloth during the day. Today she is 1 week old and I wanted to share a few photos and my thoughts of my favorite diapers so far.

As you see these pictures, Lucy is less than a week old, 8 lbs and 21 inches long.

When David was born I bought 1 dozen Orange Edge newborn prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers. Turns out I actually wish I had bought more! Prefolds are the diapers most people are intimidated by because they have to learn how to fold them. As frequently as I change her diapers, they are the most economical idea, and I end up just folding the prefold in thirds and laying it in the cover.

For those of you wondering how a GMD orange edge prefold fits a larger newborn, here is your photo. I did the jelly roll fold. Basically, I put the prefold down, rolled the edges in towards her legs, folded the front under her belly button and fastened with a snappi.

The jelly roll fold is my favorite for preventing blowouts and reusing covers. Tri-folding and laying in a cover is great but as she gets older the big, runny poos will get all over the cover.

Even though she doesn’t look it, she loves these diapers.

These are the size 1 Applecheeks pocket diapers. I love that you don’t have unstuff them before you wash them – they come unstuffed in the agitation of the wash cycle. I also love the all natural fibers of the bamboo inserts.

As you can tell they are a smidge big on her still, but she will grow into them super quick. I am glad that they are a bit big because she can wear the size 1 diapers longer. I prefer to use them as an all in two diaper because I can use the insert like a prefold. But if a family member is going to change her I make it a pocket diaper so it is much easier for them.

I also use the Nifty Nappy fitteds and pocket diapers.  Vilate said her fitteds are truly one size and are made to fit from birth so I was so excited to put her words to the test.

Without the added insert (which Lucy does not need yet) they are super trim! And with Vilate’s folding technique I am able to get a very snug fit. I really did want to try her newborn diapers since they don’t require a special fold and would have been easier for family to put on Lucy. But since I am the only one that really changes diapers around here I went with the one size.

The pocket diapers fold the same way and with her all natural bamboo inserts they are a very trim option. Plus you can use them like all in two diapers – just put the insert on the outside of the pocket and reuse the cover.

Here is Lucy modeling the Rumparooz One size pocket diapers.  They also sell Lil’ Joeys for newborns, but I read on their site that their one-size diapers are made to fit directly from birth. I just had to put it to the test!

The photos are proof – they really do fit right away. Lucy has those skinny little legs and there are no gaps. I was also pleasantly surprised by the low rise – they fit under her umbilical chord.

The only thing I don’t like about these is that they are a pocket diaper, so I have to stuff them and unstuff them. But they are super easy for my family to use so they are great to have on hand.

And check out the vertical photo to the right – they are very trim. Lucy does not need a lot of bulk right now since she poops more than she pees and I end up changing her so frequently.

Another one size pocket diaper that claims to fit directly from birth is Softbums. As you can see the legs cinch up super small and it fits her very well in the rise.

But I am not impressed with the bulk. Inside this diaper is the dry-touch mini pod. It has 3 layers of mircofiber terry and 1 layer of fleece. They sell a much trimmer Organic Bamboo Mini Pod, which is just 3 layers of bamboo fleece. I really want those because this is just really bulky on her and she doesn’t need all that absorption.

Besides the bulk I am impressed with how easy they are to use and can be used as all in twos, which are my favorite types of diapers.

All in all, my favorite diaper to use during the brief time she is this tiny and filling her diapers so often are the prefolds. I just trofld them and lay them in a cover and then there is no stuffing and they are super trim. Then for family members to use I hand them an AppleCheeks pocket diaper or the Rumparooz. The AppleCheeks will last her a while and the Rumparooz still fit David at 25 lbs and 20 months old.

I am starting to shop for cloth diapers now that I will have 2 in diapers at the same time for at least a year. As I browse around I am drawn to stores that are smaller, run by work at home moms and especially from moms that live in Kansas or pretty close.

By all appearances, Nifty Nappy serged fitted cloth diapers look very close to  Goodmama serged fitted cloth diapers.  They both have the same great fit on my little boy, but I am going to show you all the similarities and differences between the two so you can make a wise shopping decision. I am just laying out the facts – you chose what features are important to you.

Materials:

Goodmama: Cotton Knit or Cotton Woven outer/cotton velour inner / cotton velour soaker
Nifty Nappy – Cotton Knit outer/hemp fleece sandwich layer/microfleece inner layer / hemp fleece & bamboo velour soaker

Main Differences:

The Nifty Nappy dipes are trimmer than the Goodmamas.  As for absorbancy, they are almost equal. The Goodmama OBV diapers I have used overnight with an added hemp/fleece doubler.  As for rise, they are almost equal. The Goodmama diaper is a tiny bit lower than the Nifty Nappy. Both are one size diapers with snaps going through all the layers.  The Goodmama has a snap in 2 petal soaker whereas Nifty Nappy has a lay in soaker.

I hope this helps clear up any confusion or questions! If you have other questions or ways they compare please leave your questions in the comments and I will update my post after I get a few.

Edited to add:

I had the Goodmama diaper on David wrong the first time but now with Suzanne’s help I have it on perfectly – no bunching and a smooth fit.  She was gracious and told me that she actually painstakingly desgined them not to bunch, so that was definitely user error.

Also, I appreciate all the comments supporting both of these hardworking women.  I admire their attention to detail and quality diapers!  Being a WAHM is more than I can do – I barely keep my blog updated with kids around so how they do it all is beyond me!

This was our first All in One to review and we just loved it!  The TotWraps Dream diaper is named “dream” for many reasons.  It fits like a dream, is a soft as a dream and can help littles have sweet dreams the entire night with no leaks!

I had never heard of TotWraps until I saw them featured on my friend Chari’s blog Take Time to Smell the Rose. I immediately check them out.  That is how we first met. Then it was love.  It is everything a diaper should be – squishy, absorbent, soft and snaps!

Did I say absorbent? Well it is! It has a zorb inner that can hold 11 ounces of liquid!

Josh’s very first impression when he saw it was “hey, superman!” For good reason too, this is called the superhero diaper.  Now David can leap over buildings in a single bound! Watch out world!

My first reaction was, “Wow, K.U.!”  K.U. stands for Kansas University – the other state university here. And their colors are red and blue.  I graduated from the proud purple and black Kansas State University – KSU – or the better school! I will definitely have some family members (who are unfortunately KU fans) dying to change Bubs into this diaper just to get these colors on him in front of me. In my house.

All jokes aside, this diaper just flat out rocks.  Even without the added insert it is a very absorbent diaper. And the snaps are perfectly placed so Josh’s big fingers can put them in place without a lick of trouble!

And did you know that TotWraps makes the most adorable hooded bath towels?  Here is my favorite: a dog, complete with his tongue hanging out!  They are full sized towels so the child will never actually grow out of it, that is until it isn’t “cool” anymore, and they will still fit it when “cool” stops mattering!

In addition to the dog they also have a frog, which is just too stinking cute for words!

That is what I think, now what did Josh think of the diaper?

Sloomb has been one of my favorite brands of cloth diapers and wool since I started cloth diapering Lizzie 2 years ago.  I first fell in love with their hemp preflats. Hemp is one of the most absorbent materials I have ever come across!

Then every time I would see a cute picture of a baby in SustainableBabyish soakers or longies on DiaperSwappers I would dream of the day I would put my little one in those soft, coloful, squishy pants.

And now they make knit longies too!

So you can imagine how stoked I was when they offered to send me a pair of knit longies to review – I screamed! Literally squealed with joy and danced around the house.  So this review is totally biased. I have been in love with the product and the company for 2 years.

They also offered to send me a pair of their snapless fitted diapers and I was thisclose to saying yes.  Why not show a video of Josh using a snappi?  Well, because he doesn’t like to and this is his event, that’s why. But the fit of the organic bamboo fleece fitted with snaps is impeccable!

Here is Bubs sporting his knit wool longies.  He was super warm in the freezing temps when he went to church!  The longies are 2 layers thick – I wouldn’t put these on him in the summer.  In fact, as durable and easy to clean as they are I am so in love with them he is only going to wear them when we go out of the house. I don’t want them turning into a dust mop as he scoots around the floor!

Another reason I love SustainableBabyish – they care about the environment. Like seriously care. For every diaper they sell they are planting a tree in southeast Asia to combat greenhouse effect and deforestation.  I give them a standing ovation for that!

Super fast, easy, soft and comfortable – Happy Heinys received a double thumbs up from my husband!

Whenever I saw Happy Heinys online, I was hesitant to get excited about them. I had questions: would they get snagged in the wash? Do they have other options besides microfiber? Will I like those thick velcro tabs?

Quick answers: Yes, Yes, and Yes!  LOL
They did get snagged on the wash – the fold over laundry tabs did not stay folded over the entire time.  But this is a small price to pay for my husband having a diaper he can be excited about.  When it comes to the age old debate of snaps vs. velcro we just agree to disagree!
Oh, and FYI – Happy Heinys makes a snaps version too!

I was sent the microfiber insert to try out – and I thought it so closely resembled the Fuzzi Bunz insert I had to look at the tag to remember which is which. Not that it mattered, but I wanted the video to be 100% authentic.  For the rest of you natural fibers lovin’ mamas – Happy Heinys is making a natural pocket diaper made form hemp! It fit David like a dream!  And while I was concerned about the size of the tabs (and don’t ask me why, I am just not used to them being that big…I’m used to snaps and bum genius tabs) when I used them I was delighted that they are easier to grasp and faster to put on!

Happy Heinys is helping Haiti

You can read this article for more information – but in brief, Happy Heinys is accepting donations of reusable diapers, baby clothing and small baby items. They work closely with missionaries who take the donations to orphanages on the outskirts of town – where the Red Cross often does not reach. You can also send paypal to Happy Heinys, they have an account set up to raise funds for the orphanages.

Otter blotters from Otter Babies LLC are the cadillacs of cloth diapers. They seriously have so many amazing features that you are getting a huge bang for your buck!  When you watch my video of the overview, you will see how Debby thought of just about everything when she created these amazing – and hugely daddy friendly – diapers!

Before we get to the overview and Josh’s opinion, let me give you my 2 cents and introduce you to Debby.  I love everything about these diapers.  The snap in O-Pad  is hugely innovative.  You can tell which end has more padding and then snap it in the direction you need.  I love that there are so many squishy and thirsty layers but they will wash great and dry quick because of how they are sewn. And boy are these layers absorbent!  Not even the teeniest wicking happened but when I took the dipe off David almost 2 hours later it was drenched.  Gotta love hemp and bamboo! And I am a huge fan of her front pocket that hides the hook and loop!  Now Josh can have his velcro (can you tell I am a snap girl?) and I can have a non-snagging-in-the-wash dipe!  Plus, Bubs can take off his Bum Genius now, I’d like to see him try and get to this one.

And the O-Pad is A-Mazing! It is elasticized to catch the mess and it is stuffable! So the doubler I show you in the video can be put inside the O-Pad and eliminate bunching.

She also has a Multi-Size Snap Down cover that I did not review in the video.  Check it out here – It (like all her diapers) has optional mesh tabs that while not good for night it is excellent for a potty trainer during the day since it allows the diaper to be pulled on like underwear! This one is actually better for being used as a swim diaper than the multsize dipe I mention in the video.  This Multi Size AI2 is a great swim dipe because it is trimmer than the red floral one I reviewed.

Finally, I wish I had reviewed the regular front cover in minky instead of supplex (the blue one in the video).  I have heard so many mamas rave about the super soft feeling of minky on a diaper and the regular front cover comes in minky!  Oh well, the supplex (which is just like PUL but softer in my opinion) fits over the clothes better so that works.  But I am totally going to go look at her minky fabric choices now

Edited to Add: In the video I mentioned turning the O-Pad inside out – let me clarify that you do not have to turn it inside out to clean it properly. You can just pull the doubler petals out the end they are sewn to – easy peasy!
